Wine grape producers in Paarl and Swartland can equip themselves with the latest trends and practices for managing pests and diseases at a Winetech Vinpro Information Day.

The regional information day will be presented in a digital format from 8:30 to 11:30 on May 12, 2020.

PLEASE NOTE: Given the COVID-19 lockdown and health and safety considerations, the Information Days will take on a webinar format, with online interaction. Persons who have registered will receive a link to the online webinar platform 24 hours before the event.

“The Winetech Vinpro Information Days are held annually in May and September in six different regions, focusing on the technical viticultural trends and advice relevant to each grape growing area,” says Conrad Schutte, manager of Vinpro’s consultation service.

With the onset of winter, the management of pests and diseases in the vineyard, as well as effective cover crop management, is extremely relevant.

Prof Pia Addison of Stellenbosch University will share effective practices for the management of ants, weevils and long-horned grasshoppers, while Prof Francois Halleen of the ARC-Nietvoorbij will focus on the management practices for trunk diseases and their role in the dieback of bearers and poor bud break. Further to this, Brahm Jonker of Sentritex will give an overview of the management of pests by means of beneficial insects.

Edo Heyns of Advini will share world trends in the organic and biodynamic wine markets, and Ivan Jansen van Rensburg of Barenbrug will advise wine grape producers on goal-driven cover crop management.

The Paarl Swartland Information Day is presented with a financial contribution from Musfeld Soilworks.

“We encourage all wine grape producers, winemakers, viticulturists, suppliers to the wine industry and other interested parties to equip themselves with the important information shared at regional days,” Conrad says.

Attendance costs R150 per person and registration is compulsory. Persons who have registered will receive a link to the online webinar platform 24 hours before the event.
